Questions? FAQ

Where does Cali Salsa come from and what is its history?

expand_more
This style was born in Cali, Colombia, known as the 'World Capital of Salsa'. Although salsa has Caribbean roots, people in Cali developed their own interpretation in the 1970s. They would speed up 33 RPM records to 45 RPM, forcing dancers to develop unprecedented foot agility. It is also known as 'Show Salsa' due to its overflowing energy.

Why is this style so fast?

expand_more
Speed is the DNA of Cali. Unlike linear styles that focus on complex arm figures, Cali Salsa focuses on 'repique' (fast footwork). The basic step is very tight and rapid, allowing dancers to keep up with the intense percussion of Colombian Boogaloo and Pachanga.

Is this style only for professionals?

expand_more
Not at all! At Imperio, we break down complex steps to make speed accessible to everyone. We start with a solid foundation without acrobatics, focusing on coordination and rhythm. It's a great cardio workout and an incredibly fun way to connect with Latin culture.

What's the difference between Cali and NY Style?

expand_more
NY Style is 'linear' (danced on an imaginary line) and emphasizes technical elegance. Cali Salsa is more 'circular' and explosive. In Cali, dancers stay much more on the balls of their feet, whereas in NY, the feet stay flatter for smoothness.

Do you include acrobatics in the classes?

expand_more
Acrobatics are part of the Cali 'show' style. In our regular social classes, we focus on footwork and turns. However, for advanced levels or special workshops, we teach 'lifts' and stunts in a safe and progressive manner.
