HISTORY & HERITAGE
DIVE INTO THE SOUL OF THE STYLE
Born from the evolution of traditional rhythms and musical influences of the 1980s, Kizomba is a village and family dance born in Angola. Far from clichés, it is based on a natural walk and a sincere connection through the chest. In the Kimbundu language, Kizomba means 'Party': it is a moment of collective celebration where respect for musical timing takes precedence over demonstration.
Discovering this style means opening yourself to a vibrant and organic social dance. Learning focuses on listening to the music rather than just executing figures, rediscovering the simplicity and grounding of the dancers of Luanda. Whether you seek technical mastery or the pure pleasure of sharing, every step becomes an authentic conversation on the floor.

Questions? FAQ
Where does Kizomba come from and what does its name mean?
expand_more
Kizomba is from Angola. In the Kimbundu language, 'Kizomba' means 'party'. It developed in the 1980s by merging traditional Semba with Zouk rhythms. It is a dance of celebration, family, and connection.
Why is it called the 'African Tango'?
expand_more
Although it has no direct historical relation to Argentine Tango, it got this nickname because of its closed embrace connection and its very fluid, grounded walking steps. It is a dance of 'walking' together in perfect harmony.
How important is the connection?
expand_more
It is the very essence of Kizomba. Unlike salsa where hands are used extensively for leading, in Kizomba, leading happens primarily through the chest/torso. You learn to breathe with your partner and follow every weight shifts.
Is it a difficult style for men?
expand_more
Many men find Kizomba rewarding because it's not about learning hundreds of complex arm figures, but about becoming a solid, protective 'leader' through the walk. It is a very grounded and masculine style in its leading.
What music is played?
expand_more
Kizomba is danced to slow, deep rhythms. We teach how to distinguish classic Kizomba (Angola), Semba (happier and faster), and Ghetto Zouk (more modern and melodic). Each variation has its own 'flavor'.
